The Livermore school board is set to consider at Tuesday’s regular meeting the termination of about 15 full-time equivalents for the upcoming school year due to a lack of work and or lack of funds.

The proposed terminations come as part of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s plan to make $14.8 million in ongoing budget adjustments and cuts for the 2026-27 school year.

Among the reductions, classified employees are bearing the brunt of potential cuts with approximately 13 FTE on the table for potential termination. Among those on the chopping block are about 6.5 FTE paraeducator positions, 1 FTE director of communications and engagement and the reduction of 0.25 FTE for an athletic trainer at each high school, down to 0.5 FTE each.

Among certificated employees, 1.0 FTE director of secondary education and 0.6 FTE Career Technical Education teacher are proposed for reduction.

CTE teacher Paul Grasseschi challenged a preliminary layoff notice he received March 12 from the district, but Administrative Law Judge Mario Choi of the California Office of Administrative Hearings determined that the district can give final notice to Grasseschi, according to an order by Choi.

The district must issue layoff notices to affected employees by May 15.

The board meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (May 12). The agenda is available here.

* Board President Steven Drouin is slated to give a progress update on the process of finding candidates for the next LVJUSD superintendent in coordination with the Alameda County Office of Education.

* The board is also poised to approve the district’s third interim financial report for the 2025-26 school year.

According to the third interim report, the district is projected to meet the 3% minimum reserve requirement for the current school year.

“The district may not be able to meet its financial obligations in the subsequent fiscal years if reductions are not made for the 2027-2028 fiscal year,” according to the agenda.

The third interim report accounts for revenue and expenditure changes made between the adopted budget and closure of the accounting period of April 30, 2026. The third interim is up for board approval because the district’s previous interim financial report showed that LVJUSD may have been unable to meet its financial obligations two years out.

* The board is poised to approve a Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators, indicating that there is an “insufficient number of certificated persons who meet the district’s specified employment criteria” for select positions.

* The board will also consider approving new courses for high school students. The proposed courses include Advanced Animation A/B, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations Honors, Spanish for Spanish Speakers 3 A/B, AP Physics 1 (Algebra Based) A/B, Metals and Machine Tools A/B, Advanced Metals and Machine Tools A/B, Advanced Robotics A/B and Symphony Strings with Honors (H) A/B.
