Veterans Day Parade

The Tri-Valley Veterans Day Parade and concert returns to downtown Pleasanton on Sunday, honoring local veterans and active-duty military members ahead of the national holiday on Tuesday.

The parade, now in its 29th year, will begin at 1 p.m. Nov. 8 in front of Veterans Memorial Hall, 301 Main St., and continue for four blocks north to St. Mary’s Street.

More than 75 organizations are expected to participate in this year’s event, which focuses on recognizing student veterans. Los Positas College student veterans Trevor Penero and Anthony Sandoval will serve as the parade’s grand marshals, and the procession will be led by a color guard consisting of members of the Pleasanton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6298 and American Legion Post 237.

Following the parade, at 1:30 p.m., the Pleasanton Community Concert Band will perform in front of Veterans Memorial Hall, 301 Main St. There will also be free ice cream for attendees.

The parade and concert are organized by the Pleasanton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, American Legion Post and the city.

Diwali in Dublin

Tri-Valley residents can celebrate Diwali with performances, music, food and more at a free event set for 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday at Emerald Glen Park.

Dublin Diwali Mela will also feature a Diwali bazaar, inspired by Delhi and Mumbai markets, and a festival procession called Rath Yatra, according to event host Tri-Valley Hindu Connect.

Diwali is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists in South Asia and across the diaspora. The five-day festival of lights honors the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and light over darkness.

A $5 donation is requested to help cover the cost of the event, and those who want to attend are encouraged to RSVP online.
