The early vote shows tight races for the Area 3 and Area 5 seats on Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District board. Meanwhile, Tara Boyce jumped out to an early lead in the contest for the Area 2 seat.
Parent and data analyst Angela Brady holds a slim lead of about 140 votes over former teacher Deborah Gibson in the two-person race for the Area 3 seat, according to initial results from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
Initial ballot counts returned after the polls closed show Brady with 52.15% (1,516) of the vote, trailed closely by Gibson at 47.85% (1,391). Initial turnout showed 295,241 vote-by-mail ballots cast, for a turnout of about 30%.
The winner will represent north Livermore and a small population north of the city’s border in Contra Costa County, where about 80 votes in the Area 3 election have been counted so far, according to the Contra Costa Clerk Recorder’s Office.
As the district’s first by-trustee-area election, there is no incumbent for Area 3.
Area 5
At-large trustees Christiaan VandenHeuvel and Deena Kaplanis are in a close race to represent Area 5 on the board, with preliminary results showing VandenHeuvel with a 160-vote lead over Kaplanis and the third candidate, district parent Sam Phelps, trailing behind.
VandenHeuvel currently has 45.72% (1,676) of the vote compared with 41.33% (1,515) for Kaplanis. Phelps is at 12.96% (475).
The registrar’s office shows an initial vote-by-mail turnout of 27.29% (268,530 ballots cast).
If either Kaplanis or VandenHeuvel wins the by-trustee-area election, they would vacate their at-large seat with two years remaining on their term. The at-large position would be filled by provisional appointment or special election.
Area 2
Livermore school board candidate Tara Boyce jumped out to an early lead in the race for the Area 2 seat, with initial ballot counts showing her with 75.61% (1,711) of the vote and her opponent, Stephen Orgain, trailing at 24.39% (552).
As of 8:49 p.m., the preliminary results from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters show 268,530 vote-by-mail ballots cast, for a turnout of 27.29%.
Boyce is a district parent and finance consultant who ran unsuccessfully for an at-large seat on the board in the November 2024 General Election. Orgain is a regional sales manager and first-time school board candidate.
The winner of the Area 2 seat will represent central Livermore on the five-person board.
