Elementary school students gathered last Tuesday at the Livermore Rodeo grounds for a day of hands-on learning about agriculture and food production.

Dubbed Ag Adventure Day, the annual event drew nearly 1,000 third-graders from the Livermore school district to engage in interactive stations about cattle roping, milking, water systems, pollination and the role of working dogs in agriculture and inspection.

Demonstrating at the stations during the April 21 event were about 300 Livermore High School students participating in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program along with community partners, according to a joint statement by Livermore Area Recreation and Park District and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.

“Years ago, we asked students where their milk comes from, and the overwhelming answer was ‘the grocery store,’” said Sheila Fagliano, longtime FFA volunteer and Livermore Sanitation community relations manager, in the statement. “This event is about helping students make that connection in a way that sticks.”

Ag Adventure Day was organized by the LHS agricultural department and community partners. The event also included teacher and parent volunteers.

Although Ag Adventure Day is typically held at LHS, it was relocated to LARPD’s covered arena due to weather conditions.

“The FFA students really stepped up this year,” LHS agricultural educator Joe McNealy said in the statement. “With the last-minute change, they adapted quickly and made sure the day still ran smoothly for the younger students.”

LARPD General Manager Mat Fuzie also praised the success of the event.

“This was a great example of organizations coming together to support students and families,” Fuzie said in the statement. “We’re glad we could provide a space that allowed the event to continue.”
