Heading into the East Bay Athletic League boys’ basketball season, I wrote about how incredibly tough and deep the league was this year.
Now here we are at the last week of the season with just the NorCal finals and state title games left, and there is vindication for my early-season boasting.
Tuesday night in the Northern California D-I Regional finals for the fourth time this year No. 2 seed San Ramon Valley will face No. 4 Granada.
The winner will have a spot on the CIF D-I State Championship game, guaranteeing the EBAL will have a team playing for the state title.
The two teams have met three previous times. The Matadors (26-4) took the first one 60-58, but the Wolves took the next two, winning 80-56 in the EBAL playoffs, then 77-68 in the first round of the NCS Open playoffs.
The game is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday night (March 5) at Dublin High.
The winner will play the victor of the SoCal final between Mater Dei and St. John Bosco. That title game will be Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
On the girls’ side, Carondelet has advanced with the NorCal title game where the Cougars will travel to Bishop O’Dowd on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The winner faces the winner of Bishop Mongomery-The Brentwood School for the state title. The championship game is set for Friday at 6 p.m., also at the Golden 1 Center.
In soccer, the Dougherty Valley boys were the No. 1 seed in the CIF D-II Northern California Regionals and advanced to the finals before falling to No. 2 seed Burlingame 2-1 in the title game.
