Kristie Wang, a policy advocate and current Livermore school board member, is running to represent District 4 on City Council, a seat currently held by Vice Mayor Bob Carling, who is terming out.
Carling expressed his support for Wang’s run to fill his seat in a statement.
“I supported Kristie’s candidacy for school board and can now offer my unconditional endorsement for city council from District 4. She is always well prepared, thoughtful, and devoted to improving the quality of life for all residents of Livermore,” Carling said.
Wang, who was recently elevated to clerk, is serving her fourth year on the school board with her term set to expire in November. Her run for City Council means at least one seat on the board is guaranteed to change hands; however, another will also be up for grabs as fellow board member Yanira Guzmán’s first term is also expiring. Guzmán has not yet announced whether she plans to run for reelection.
Wang is the first to announce her candidacy for the open council seat in District 4.
The District 3 council seat currently held by Brittni Kiick is also up for election this fall as well as the at-large mayor seat. Neither Kiick nor Mayor John Marchand have announced plans for reelection as of yet.
A longtime Tri-Valley resident, Wang has lived in the region with her husband and two children for 25 years, 17 of them in Livermore.
“Our city continues to face challenges with housing affordability, traffic, and maintaining our infrastructure. Housing affordability affects all of us. I see first-hand how it hampers our ability to attract and retain quality teachers, first responders, service workers, and national laboratory employees,” Wang said in a statement announcing her run for council.
“I have a track record of working with people from differing perspectives to solve problems and make progress on challenging issues. My City Council and School Board endorsements reflect that, and I am humbled by their support,” she added.
Wang is a trained public policy professional who has worked at every level of government and as a community organizer. She has been active in several community organizations, including more than 12 years as a volunteer advocate for Tri-Valley Haven.
Since 2018, she has successfully worked to pass local tobacco control policies to combat the epidemic of youth vaping. She has served on Livermore’s Intergovernmental Committee since 2020, representing the school district in working with the city of Livermore, the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, and Las Positas College on issues of mutual interest. She also currently serves on the Delegate Assembly of the California State School Board Association.
“As councilmember, I will be ready on day one to apply the knowledge, experience, and networks acquired through my community service, activism, and school board trustee work. I will be a strong representative for District 4 and will work with my fellow councilmembers and regional leaders to ensure Livermore is a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” Wang said.
