Wheels’ 40th
Wheels, the Tri-Valley’s public transportation service operated by the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority, is hosting a rider appreciation event at the Livermore Transit Center this Monday (July 27) to celebrate the agency’s 40th anniversary.
The birthday party is the latest extension of the agency’s festivities this year, which included free rides on the Wheels 40th Anniversary Bus and its “Spot the Bus” photo contest.
“We want to share our appreciation for over 40-years of support from our riders and the greater community,” LAVTA director of customer experience David Mark said in a press release.
Monday’s event runs from 3-7 p.m. The first 200 attendees will receive free Rocko’s ice cream tacos. For more information, visit wheelsbus.com.
Haggerty memorial
The Alameda County Fairgrounds is set to host a celebration of life this weekend to honor former Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty who died earlier this month. He was 68.
According to a flier for the event, the memorial will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday (July 25) at the fairgrounds amphitheater. Following the celebration of life will be a reception, which will take place at The Farmhouse, which is located inside the fairgrounds.
Attendees are encouraged to wear “bright cheerful colors” rather than traditional black clothing in honor of “Scott’s joyful spirit.
Haggerty died in his retirement home state of Tennessee on July 5. He had been hospitalized after receiving a lung transplant earlier this year.
Poppy Ridge honor
Golfweek, a magazine part of the larger USA Today network, recently named Livermore’s Poppy Ridge Golf Course as the 17th best public-access golf course in the country.
The golf course was recently renovated and rebuilt last year.
The recognition was part of the magazine’s 2026 “Top 100 Best Courses You Can Play” list, which it unveiled last month. This list was for courses that allow some sort of public access.
Following last month’s accolade, the Livermore golf course hosted the 59th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship for the first time ever. The event, which was scheduled to run from Tuesday to Friday, featured several of the world’s top amateur golfers, including two from the Bay Area: Joshua Kim, a Danville resident, and Jaden Dumdumaya of Benicia.
Senate District 5’s Woman of the Year
Sen. Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton) recently honored Stockton Deputy Police Chief Anabel Morris as the 2026 Woman of the Year for his District 5.
The Tri-Valley senator recognized Morris at a reception at his district office in Stockton earlier this month for a number of achievements, including being the first Latina deputy chief in Stockton Police Department history.
“Deputy Chief Morris is a true trailblazer, and it’s my great honor to name her as the 2026 Woman of the Year for Senate District 5,” McNerney said in a press release. “Deputy Chief Morris exemplifies the best of local law enforcement, working passionately throughout her impressive career to foster trust between the community and police, inspire local youth, and make Stockton safer.”
According to McNerney’s office, Morris was raised in the farm labor community in the San Joaquin Valley before joining the Stockton Police Department in 2001. Over the following decade, she had served on virtually every position before being promoted to sergeant in 2016.
She was then promoted to lieutenant in 2021 and served on various commander positions before moving up to the position of captain in January 2025 and then deputy chief this past March.
“From migrant housing to deputy chief, my rise was powered by the people who believed in me — their faith turned my beginnings into momentum,” Morris said in the press release.
