Murder, espionage and rocket science all meet in Livermore in John G. Bluck’s latest thriller.
The Livermore author’s newest novel, “To Die in Livermore”, was released July 14 by Rough Edges Press, an imprint of Wolfpack Publishing. The seventh installment in Bluck’s Luke Ryder series, the novel pulls the fictional deputy-sheriff into a mystery rooted in the author’s hometown.
“I chose my hometown, Livermore, Calif., as the setting for this seventh volume of my Luke Ryder series of novels because visualizing the story unfold in a familiar place was easy,” Bluck said in a press release.
The novel’s protagonist is Luke Ryder, a Kentucky deputy-sheriff who is called west by the FBI after a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory engineer is murdered. The victim had been working on the design of a nuclear rocket tied to national defense, raising alarms in the U.S. intelligence community.
Bluck’s writing draws from his background in journalism, the military and NASA — experiences that Rough Edges Press managing production editor Rachel Del Grosso said help shape the book’s realism.
“It gives the book a real sense of authenticity,” Del Grosso said in the press release.
During the Vietnam War, Bluck served as an Army journalist at Fort Lewis in Washington. He later worked in Washington, D.C., as a television news film cameraman for WMAL-TV, now WJLA-TV, where he covered bank robberies and homicides, as well as political and Watergate scandal stories.
Bluck eventually moved into science communication, joining NASA as a writer and producer of television documentaries. He later wrote articles and press releases for the agency before becoming a NASA spokesman.
His work as an author has also received recognition from the Public Safety Writers Association, which has awarded two of his novels and two of his short stories in recent years.
“To Die in Livermore” continues Bluck’s Luke Ryder series, following the law enforcement protagonist through thriller and mystery plots.
