California Sen. Jerry McNerney has selected the Three Valleys Community Foundation as the Nonprofit of the Year for his State Senate District 5.

The state senator — who represents the southern Tri-Valley, along with parts of San Joaquin County — will honor the 3VCF at the annual Nonprofit of the Year event on May 20 at the State Capitol in Sacramento

“Three Valleys Community Foundation represents the very best of what nonprofit leadership looks like — bringing people together, advancing local solutions, boosting other nonprofits, and improving the health and wellbeing of communities throughout the Tri-Valley,” McNerney (D-Pleasanton) said in a press release April 22.

Founded in 2020, 3VCF is a philanthropic organization that provides financial and organizational support to local nonprofits and projects in order to improve the overall quality of life across the region.

Some of the nonprofit’s initiatives highlighted in McNerney’s press release include the Community Health Impact Grants, which support health-related organizations; the NextGen Philanthropy Fund, which supports youth programs in the region; and the 925 GIVES initiative, which launched last year as an online fundraising event aimed at supporting nonprofits located in the 925 area code.

The senator’s office also noted how 3VCF brings the community together through regional events like the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship Breakfast & Awards and the State of Giving gathering, which celebrates philanthropy in the Tri-Valley.

Kelly Bowers, the retired Livermore Valley schools superintendent who was hired as the foundation’s first permanent CEO and president in 2022, said in the press release that McNerney’s recognition was a “powerful affirmation of what is possible when a community comes together with shared purpose”.

“We are grateful to Sen. McNerney for his continued support of nonprofits and for recognizing the transformational role of community foundations like 3VCF,” Bowers said. “His leadership in advancing (Senate Bill) 1240 to establish the Office of Nonprofit Empowerment reflects a deep commitment to strengthening the nonprofit sector and reducing barriers for organizations serving our communities.”

“This honor reflects the collective leadership, generosity, and commitment of our Board, Advisory Council, Professional Advisors Network, fundholders, partners, and nonprofits that do extraordinary work every day,” Bowers added. “Together, we are turning local generosity into lasting community impact.”
