Livermore voters will see some familiar faces running for city office in the November election along with a mix of incumbents and newcomers vying for school board, special districts and representation of the wider region.
The list of candidates for the Nov. 3 general election has solidified for many races, given the initial filing deadline Friday. However, races lacking an eligible incumbent were permitted a five-day filing extension to next Wednesday (Aug. 12).
For the Livermore City Council, all three races have been set in stone.
District 1 Councilmember Evan Branning is running unopposed for reelection and will be the sole candidate to represent northwest Livermore, according to the City Clerk’s Office.
As for District 2, covering northeast Livermore, Councilmember Ben Barrientos is set to face off against newcomer Narayan Tadimeti, according to the city website. Tadimeti ultimately qualified for the ballot, after previously being listed as having withdrawn from the race.
Current Livermore Mayor John Marchand is running unopposed for the at-large position.
Three seats are also up for grabs this November on the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District Board of Education.
As the district’s first by-trustee election, the three posts are wide open.
The race for Area 2, representing central Livermore, features returning candidate Tara Boyce and newcomer Stephen R. Orgain.
In Area 3, covering north Livermore, the race currently features newcomers Angela M. Brady and Deborah “Debbie” Gibson. Former trustee Kate Runyon pulled papers but withdrew, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters’ Office.
For Area 5, current at-large trustees Deena Kaplanis and Christiaan VandenHeuvel are poised to face off – along with a third candidate, Sam Phelps – to represent southeast Livermore as well as Alameda County land south of the city. Both trustees were elected to their positions during 2024 with term expirations of 2028, pursuing a fresh four-year term this year from safe seats.
Seven candidates are vying for three seats at-large on the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors. Incumbents Maryalice Summers Faltings and Philip Pierpont will face newcomers Timothy Barry, Larry Bird, Matthew Bogdanowicz, Mike Ralph and Laureen Turner.
The LARPD filing deadline has been extended with Director David Furst not seeking reelection.
The wider region
The East Bay Regional Park District will see four seats up for election on its Board of Directors, including a contested race for Ward 5 representing Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, Fremont and Newark. Incumbent Olivia Sanwong will face newcomer Bruce Henry.
In the race for Congressional District 14 are Democrats Melissa Hernandez and Aisha Wahab. The pair are also competing in the Aug. 18 special general election for the months-long remainder of the term vacated by Rep. Eric Swalwell amid sexual misconduct allegations.
In the State Assembly District 16 race, Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) is set to face off against real estate appraiser Joe Rubay (R-Alamo) for the fourth time in the last six years.
The seat represents the communities of Alamo, Danville, Dublin, Lafayette, Livermore, Moraga, Orinda, Pleasanton, San Ramon and Walnut Creek.
Back in June, Bauer-Kahan ended the primary election with nearly 64% of the vote while Rubay finished with 32.15% of the vote.
