The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau has confirmed the identity of a Livermore man who died last month in a solo bicycle crash along Encino Drive.

The decedent was identified by authorities as Phillip Wong, 58.

According to Livermore police, the cyclist was riding eastbound on Encino Drive near Laguna Street just before 3 p.m. Jan. 23 when an apparent mechanical issue caused him to crash over the handlebars of his bicycle.

The man, later identified as Wong, sustained critical injuries and was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. Police said that he was wearing a helmet at the time, that there was no vehicle involved in the crash and that speed did not appear to have been a factor.

Wong’s death represented the first traffic fatality of 2024 in the city of Livermore.
