Nadine Horner and Charity Steele are Livermore’s two newest planning commissioners following their appointment by the city council last week.
The council held a special meeting on March 3 during which they interviewed seven candidates vying for two open seats on the five-member advisory body. The spots were initially vacated by Steven Dunbar who was elected to city council in November and Daniel Leary who completed his term as of March 1.
Horner and Steele were appointed to full four-year terms set to expire on March 1, 2029.
According to her application, Steele has lived in Livermore for nine and a half years. She is a strategic planning consultant and is a member of the Board of Directors of Livermore Downtown Inc.
“My involvement in civic and community activities comes from a genuine love for Livermore and desire to contribute meaningfully and create positive experiences for others,” Steele wrote in her application.
“As a board member for Livermore Downtown, Inc., I have had the opportunity to contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing our city’s built-environment while fostering community engagement. This includes collaborating with city leaders and local stakeholders on projects that align with Livermore’s downtown development goals, which not only serve practical needs but also capture the essence of our community’s identity, history, and values,” she added in response to another application prompt.
A recent Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory retiree, Horner has lived in Livermore for 24 years, according to her application. From 2002 to 2004, she served as president and CEO of the Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Over the past two decades, she has been involved in the community in various capacities including through the Tri-Valley Education Collaborative, the Bankhead Theater’s Rae Dorough Speakers Series, as president of the Rotary Club of Livermore Valley, international youth exchange officer for Valley Dance Theater, president of the Las Positas College Foundation, chair of the chamber and as a member of the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District Chancellor Selection Team.
She has also served on a number of boards including the Pedrozzi Scholarship Foundation and UNCLE Credit Union and the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District chancellor selection team, among other community organizations.
The other five candidates interviewed last Monday included architect and former planning commissioner Neal Pann, foreman for Walschon Fire Protection Inc. Mark Thompson, IT product manager Asa Strout, strategic and executive communications professional Stephanie Shang and information system security engineer Andrew Paterson.
“We had an impressive field of applicants to choose from for the two open seats on our Planning Commission,” Councilmember Kristie Wang told Livermore Vine. “We’re so fortunate to live in a community of smart, dedicated people who are willing to step up and serve. Charity Steele and Nadine Horner are terrific additions, and we look forward to their contributions to the important work of the Commission.”
The Planning Commission meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The next meeting is currently set for March 18.
