Sponsored by all three of Livermore’s governmental bodies (City, School District, and LARPD), this is a week to stand against bullies and for inclusion. The week began as a response to school bullying.
More than one out of every five students experiences bullying every year and those experiences leave deep scars. They make what is a difficult time of life all the more painful.
Yet, bullying doesn’t necessarily end with adulthood. It simply takes different forms: cliques, ignoring or belittling others. And, as we’ve sadly seen in recent weeks, bullying can be Zoombombing or attacking others for simply existing.
No matter how old or young, participating in Unity Week is a chance to pay attention to how we treat each other and how we can do better. Here’s how to participate:
1. On Monday, take the Unity Pledge here: https://www.pacer.org/bullying
2. On Tuesday, go to the library and make a kindness card for a senior citizen. Or, if you are an elder, make a card for someone younger—intergenerational goes both ways.
3. On Wednesday, Unity Day, wear orange and help make a unity chain at one of the Livermore Libraries.
4. On Thursday, at 5:30, meet at the Wetmore entrance of Sycamore Grove to take a walk with LPD officers and LARPD rangers.
5. End the week on Friday at Stockmen’s Park where, from 3-6, participants can use sidewalk chalk to draw messages of love, hope, and support for the future.
In today’s world, standing against hate and bullying is more important than ever. Here’s to participating in Unity Week and living its message in the future.
