Caltrans will be partially closing a stretch of the southbound Interstate 680 around Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon this upcoming weekend.

According to a press release from the transportation agency, the two left lanes on the freeway will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 4) until 4 a.m. on Monday morning (Oct. 7). This partial closure follows the full shutdown of that same portion of the freeway on the weekend of Sept. 20 related to an ongoing improvement project.

“During the closures, the contractor will replace a portion of the existing deteriorated roadway with new pavement on southbound I-680,” the press release stated. “The work will repair deteriorating existing pavement and enhance motorist safety while reducing the number of nightly closures needed on the project. Each weekend closure will accomplish the amount of work that otherwise would require an estimated 40 nighttime closures.”

Caltrans stated that while the two right lanes will stay open during this weekend’s partial closure, motorists are being encouraged to take alternative routes “to alleviate traffic congestion within the construction work zone on southbound I-680 in the cities of San Ramon and Dublin.”

Apart from the southbound left-lane closures, the transportation agency also stated that both the far-left express lane and the left shoulder on northbound I-680 between Amador Valley Boulevard in Dublin and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon will be closed. The press release also stated that the I-580/I-680 interchange connector will remain open and will not be affected by the partial closure.

Caltrans said if motorists can’t avoid the area, they need to be aware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the construction zone and that drivers will need to slow down for the “cone zone”.

In the case of rain or any unanticipated developments, Caltrans said the closures will be rescheduled and the public will be notified.

After this weekend’s partial closure, the agency said there will be one more similar partial closure in this specific location scheduled for Oct. 18- 21.

“Caltrans is aware that the closures will impact the motoring public and measures are being taken to minimize inconvenience,” the agency stated in the press release.”Caltrans thanks the motoring public in advance for your patience as we work to improve I-680.”
