Livermore Planning Commissioner Steven Dunbar said he intends to join the race for the District 3 seat on City Council to represent the southeastern portion of the city.

In a statement announcing his candidacy last week, Dunbar highlighted the importance of connectivity, safety and inclusivity for the city’s future as it works to create affordable homes and forge a strong local economy.

Other top goals include maintaining a diligent budget that funds essential services and long-term maintenance for community needs and investing in traffic-reduction and safer routes to school, he told Livermore Vine.

“Even if we don’t agree, I will listen, consider all views and represent the community to the best of my ability,” Dunbar said in the announcement.

As of this week, Dunbar is one of three prospective candidates who’ve pulled papers to vie for the District 3 seat currently held by Brittni Kiick, who confirmed last week that she will not seek reelection. So far, the hopefuls have filed their intent for candidacy but have not yet formally qualified for the ballot, according to city staff.

Dunbar brings a total of six years experience on city advisory bodies to his candidacy. During that time, he also ran unsuccessfully for the local seat on the BART Board of Directors in 2020.

He began accumulating this experience as a member of the Livermore Community Asset Management Program Outreach Committee. Later, he took on his current role as a member of the Planning Commission.

Dunbar has received endorsements from Mayor John Marchand, former mayor Bob Woerner, the Alameda County Building Trades, and current and former councilmembers, including Kiick, Trish Munro and Gina Bonanno.

Dunbar has additional experience in leadership as a board member and former board secretary of Bike East Bay, a bicycle advocacy group with an eye for equity, according to the organization’s website. He works as an engineering supervisor at GILLIG, a Livermore-based manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses.
