The southbound side of Interstate 680 was closed near Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon on Saturday evening after a Dublin man who claimed to have a gun engaged in a brief standoff with law enforcement in the wake of a car crash, according to authorities.

Although the man initially told people at the scene he was armed, no weapon was ever seen or found in his possession, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP issued a sig-alert for the closure just before 6 p.m. Saturday (May 25), describing the situation as a “crash and police activity”.

The agency later confirmed the situation occurred after a minor-injury collision between a Lexus ES350 and a Mini Cooper in which the Mini veered off the roadway and into the bushes along I-680 and San Ramon Valley Boulevard.

A bystander stopped to help, but a man inside the Mini appeared agitated and said he had a gun, according to the CHP. The suspect reportedly repeated the same story to fire personnel after they arrived at the scene.

The San Ramon Police Department, which also responded to the investigation, said in a post on X as the incident was unfolding that it involved “a barricaded and armed subject on SB 680,” while adding that San Ramon Valley Boulevard was also closed.

Just after 6:30 p.m., San Ramon police said the situation was resolving: “The subject has been detained by CHP. San Ramon Valley Blvd has reopened and the freeway should open shortly.”

San Ramon Police Chief Denton Carlson also posted about the resolution, saying on X, “Outstanding response by your @SanRamonPolice Officers, who brought our Armored Rescue Vehicle to this incident. Once announcements began through the Armored Rescue Vehicle loudspeaker, the subject exited his vehicle and was placed into custody by @CHPDublin personnel.”

A drone from SRPD was also used. The CHP reported around 7:45 p.m. that all lanes of the freeway were reopened.

The 52-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, according to the CHP – which reported that drugs were found inside the vehicle. No gun was located on his person or in his car, the CHP said.
