Commuters who use Highway 84 between Fremont and Sunol should look for alternative routes for at least the coming days after part of the eastbound lane eroded and fell toward Alameda Creek amid the Presidents Day weekend storms, according to state officials.
The California Highway Patrol’s Dublin office first shared the news of the roadway “slipout” early Monday morning (Feb. 19) on the highway, also known as Niles Canyon Road, west of Sunol. As the day progressed, Caltrans confirmed one-way traffic control was in effect until 5 p.m. Monday, when a full closure would take hold because of the damage.
By Monday evening, CHP-Dublin said in a post on X, “Expect Niles Canyon Road to be closed at least the next few days as @CaltransD4 evaluates roadway conditions and options. The safety of the motoring public is priority. Thank you for your patience and please drive safe.”
Caltrans had said the plan was to reassess conditions and develop a long-term plan on Tuesday morning.
For now, heading into the morning commute, Highway 84/Niles Canyon Road was fully closed between Old Canyon Road to Main Street in Sunol, according to Caltrans.
