The three candidates vying for the State Senate seat currently occupied by Susan Eggman (D-Stockton) are set to introduce themselves and their platforms to voters ahead of the March 5 primary in an online forum hosted by Livermore Indivisible next weekend.
Starting this year, the Tri-Valley — which is currently represented under Steve Glazer's (D-Orinda) District 7 under the previous district map — will be partially represented under the new State Senate District 5, which is currently occupied by Eggman.
The new senate district lines that were the result of the most recent redistricting process following the 2020 census are set to go into effect for odd-numbered districts this year, meaning that Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin and Sunol will be represented by the same state senator as communities further east in the San Joaquin Valley including Tracy, Manteca and Stockton.
With Eggman terming out this year, the race is wide open and three candidates are on the ballot in the rapidly approaching March 5 primary election. The two candidates with the most votes will proceed to the general election in November.
The primary race consists of former congressmember and Democrat Jerry McNerney, businessman and Republican Jim Shoemaker, and Democratic Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua.
"The forum is a great way to get to know the candidates and help you decide how to vote in the Primary Election in March," Livermore Indivisible organizers said in an announcement. "In addition, it will be a great way for the candidates to get to know the Tri-Valley and our concerns."
The virtual forum is set for next Sunday (Jan. 21) at 1:30 p.m., with submissions for candidate questions open through Monday (Jan. 15). Registration is available here.
