With four positions up for grabs on the Zone 7 Water Agency Board of Directors, the candidate list is now set for the March 5 primary election ballot with a total of four candidates running for the three full-term seats and two newcomers running for the short-term seat, according to the Alameda County Registrar of Voters' Office.
Out of those six candidates, three of them are current Zone 7 incumbents Sandy Figuers, Laurene Green and Kathy Narum. Current Zone 7 Director Angela Ramirez Holmes previously confirmed to Livermore Vine that she will not seek another term.
Figures, Narum and Green will each be running for one of the three four-year term positions. Alan Burnham, a chemist who has previously worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 35 years and was an adjunct professor at Stanford University for eight years, according to his election website, will be the fourth person running for one of the full-term positions.
Burnham's website also states that he currently operates a business that provides affordable spaces for nonprofit organizations and that as a Zone 7 board member, he will "vigorously support programs for water conservation, groundwater protection and new water sources."
A fifth prospective candidate, a water affairs professional named Robert Seeley, had previously filed papers for the four-year term, but his candidacy has been withdrawn, according to the registrar's office.
The fourth position up for election on the board, which is a shortened two-year seat, currently has two names running for the seat: newcomers Catherine Brown and Seema Badar, a development director and former candidate for Dublin San Ramon Services District Board of Directors.
The two-year position is to complete the unexpired term vacated by former director Olivia Sanwong, for which Narum was appointed on an interim basis through this primary election.
Elected board members receive compensation for their attendance to meetings and conferences related to their service in water supply and flood protection. The board also meets once a month and each member serves on at least one subcommittee.
Zone 7 board seats are at-large across the agency's entire Alameda County service area, which includes incorporated and unincorporated Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublin. The agency provides flood protection to the Livermore and Amador valleys as well as serves as the water wholesaler for retailers in those communities.
