During Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District's (LVJUSD) Science Odyssey event earlier this month, seven students were recognized by local water agencies for effectively highlighting water in their respective projects.
Called the One Water Awards, the annual honor — sponsored by the City of Livermore, Zone 7 Water Agency and California Water Service — rewards participating students from first to 12th grade in the district-wide science fair who complete projects related to the topics of drinking water, recycled water, wastewater or stormwater, according to a statement from the city.
Emma C. Smith Elementary School's Vaishnavi Menon and Dia Sajin were announced as this year's grand prize winners, for their project titled "Landscaping with Native Plants".
The first place winner in the award's elementary school category was Isha Kamireddy from Lawrence Elementary School. Kamireddy's submitted project was called "Is it possible to take longer showers without wasting water?"
From the middle school category, the first prize recipient was Mendenhall Middle School's Karl Blystad, whose project was inquisitively named "How do we get Livermore out of Drought?"
Finally, in the high school category, Granada High School's Carly Thinfen, Isha Rajavel and Elisha Théréné all earned first place for their project "Quality of Various Water Sources."
Organizers said that the aim of the annual One Water Awards — now in its eighth year — is to help students to understand and appreciate the valuable resource that is water through their hard-working projects.
