Veterans Day will be celebrated in downtown Livermore at Carnegie Park this Friday.
A community event hosted by the Livermore Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Post 7265 will feature raising of the colors and remarks from speakers, including Livermore Mayor Bob Woerner and Post 7265 Commander Ronnie Forbes who is also the founder of One Nation Dream Makers, a nonprofit that distributes donated food across the Bay Area.
The Veterans Day program – set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – will kick off with a performance of the national anthem by local resident Jeana Collinsworth.
The ceremony will also include the ringing of the Bells of Peace, which is a national "bell tolling" remembrance created in collaboration with the Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the World War I Armistice, Nov. 11, 2018, according to the Bells of Peace website.
Collinsworth is set to close the ceremony with a performance of "God Bless America."
The event Friday will be the first of its kind in recent years, according to Post 7265 member and event organizer Michael Gilmore. "The last couple of years we've just gone to Stockmen's Park and hung out as veterans in the park to see people and say hi, but this year we decided to give it an expansion and put a program together," Gilmore said.
Gilmore is a 20-year retired Army veteran who was awarded a Purple Heart after serving in the Iraq War.
"Veterans Day is the day to thank your living veterans. We always celebrate Memorial Day — and I've had people tell me 'happy Memorial Day' in the past — but Memorial Day is a time to honor our fallen and those who are no longer with us. Veterans Day is a day to thank your veterans who have served or are still serving," Gilmore said, adding that he hopes people will attend the event and connect with the local veterans within the community.
Gilmore will also be speaking at the event, providing information on the history of Veterans Day.
The Amador Valley Quilters will be presenting Quilts of Valor to 10 veterans during the ceremony. The quilters will also have an information booth set up for attendees to visit along with several other organizations including the Livermore Police Department, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, Las Positas College, Alliance of Therapy Dogs and Oakland Veterans Center, among others.
Carnegie Park is located at 2155 3rd St. in Livermore and the Veterans Day celebration will take place on Friday (Nov. 11) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
