With candidate lists for city council and school board races in Pleasanton finalized last Friday, other Tri-Valley races with nomination deadline extensions are now also set as of Wednesday evening.

Contested races in Livermore, Dublin and special districts serving the region with no incumbent seeking reelection will see newcomers competing on the ballot come Nov. 5.

Livermore

The nomination periods were extended to Wednesday for Livermore City Council District 3 and school board, however, no one new joined either race.

Final candidates for Livermore council District 3 include physicist and business owner David Farley, business owner Jeff Kaskey and Planning Commissioner Steven Dunbar.

Six hopefuls will vie for two open seats on the LVJUSD board, including Tara Boyce, Deena Kaplanis, Jean Paulsen, Amanda Pepper, Margarita (Maggie) Tufts and Christiaan Vanderheuvel.

Dublin

Dublin mayor race deadline was extended as well as the Area 1 and 3 seats on the Dublin Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Candidates for mayor of Dublin have been finalized as Shawn Costello, Sherry Hu, Jean Josey and Tom Evans. Jing Firmeza will not appear on the ballot, because he only submitted an intent to run but did not qualify by the extended deadline.

In DUSD Area 1, no additional candidates filed by the extended deadline, establishing the competition between Kristian Reyes and Ramnath Shanbhogue.

As for DUSD Area 3, finance manager Jeff Clark stepped up as the only candidate during the extension. He runs for the position unopposed.

Other local races

Chabot-Las Positas Community College District

As for Chabot-Las Positas Community College District (CLPCCD) Board of Trustees, Catheryn Grier is set to claim Area 5 (representing Dublin and northeast Pleasanton) as no challengers filed by the extended deadline on Wednesday.

CLPCCD candidates in Areas 1, 4 and 7 were finalized on Friday.

Diablo Community Service District

One of the special district races taking place in Diablo will be for two seats on the Diablo Community Service District.

The special district was formed in 1969 to replace the Diablo Public Utility District. According to its website it helps maintain roads, street lights and helps provide security to Diablo residents.

The district is governed by five directors who are elected to staggered four-year terms by the residents of Diablo. There are two open seats that will be on the ballot this year.

According to the Contra Costa County Clerk’s candidate list on Wednesday, Kathleen Urbelis, who currently serves as the president of the board, did not qualify for the race. Instead, Matthew W. Cox and Phillip L. Luecht, who both qualified for the seats last week, will face off for the seat. Luecht is executive vice president at Aon, a global professional services firm and Cox currently serves on the special district’s board as the vice president and roads commissioner.

BART

Incumbent Rebecca Saltzman for the BART Board of Directors District 3 seat has not submitted papers to seek reelection after the filing period was extended until Wednesday, which means the lone candidate, Barnali Ghosh is set to win the seat.

Ghosh has served for years as chair of Berkeley’s Transportation Commission, and is currently the vice-chair of the city’s Planning Commission, according to her campaign website. The website states she had been endorsed by Saltzman.

Similarly, District 7 director Lateefah Simon did not file to run again which means Victor E. Flores, a transit and environmental advocate, and Dana Lang, a transportation funding advisor, will be facing off for the seat.

East Bay Municipal Utility District

The filing period for two seats on East Bay Municipal Utility District had been extended until Wednesday so that other candidates could apply.

For the Ward 5 seat — which covers the cities of Alameda and San Lorenzo, West Oakland, the Oakland Airport Area and a portion of San Leandro — three candidates will be competing for the four-year seat.

According to the county registrar of voters’ office, John E. Lewis, a construction manager, will be running against technology executive Jim Oddie and Alex Spehr, a parent who also works in technology support.

In Ward 6, which covers portions of Oakland, two candidates have completed their filings: entrepreneur Richard De Vera and attorney Valerie Lewis, according to the registrar’s office. A third candidate, energy efficient professional Chester Allen Livingston, did not complete his filing but his name is still listed in the race.

East Bay Regional Park District

East Bay Regional Park District Ward 1 board member and president Elizabeth Echols will not be on the ballot as she ran for the seat uncontested. However, after the deadline extensions there are several candidates that voters will have to choose from in Wards 2 and 4.

In the Ward 2 race Casey Alyson Farmer, a policy advisor and parent, is the only candidate that has qualified for the ballot as of Wednesday. Lynda Deschoambault and Shane Reisman did not complete the filing process, according to the registrar of voters’ website.

For the Ward 4 race, six people pulled nomination papers but only three have qualified. Those candidates set to appear on the ballot are librarian and writer Taryn Edwards, community affairs representative Luana España and Susan Gonzales, a retired human resources manager. Hannah Groce had an incomplete filing and Corina Lopez withdrew from the race while Tim McMahon had no filing status listed.
