The Livermore school board is slated at Wednesday’s regular meeting to consider an initial bargaining proposal from a classified union that mirrors the district’s proposition.
Both Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District and the Service Employees International Union Local 1021 — representing employees such as child nutrition and maintenance workers — have proposed reopening articles of the collective bargaining agreement that are automatically reopened annually: pay and allowances as well as health and welfare.
The agreement outlining said articles is effective July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026.
A public hearing at Wednesday’s meeting gives the community an opportunity to express their thoughts on the proposed items ahead of negotiations.
After the public hearing, the board will consider whether to approve the union’s proposal for 2025-26 reopener negotiations, as recommended by Superintendent Torie Gibson.
The board is also set to approve the addition of a new step on the 2025-26 salary schedule for classified managers/confidentials, according to the agenda. The new column represents a 5% increase over the highest paid column currently on their salary schedule. Pending board approval, the pay column will take effect retroactive to July 1, 2025.
The pay column would be added in accordance with the “Me, too” clause contained in the collective bargaining agreements of employee groups including classified managers/confidentials, the agenda states. Under the clause, classified managers/confidentials received an offer equivalent to the cost of the new column applied to the CSEA salary schedule effective July 1, 2025.
Ahead of the meeting, the majority of board correspondence revolved around teacher compensation, amid the recent declaration of an impasse in negotiations between the teachers’ union and district over wages and benefits.
Of the 22 board correspondence from the community members, 21 expressed support for increasing teacher compensation.
The LVJUSD board is scheduled to meet starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12. The full agenda is available here.
In other business:
*Trustees are also set to hold a discussion on the current board meeting calendar, following changes made last spring, according to the agenda. At the time of change, the district planned to revisit the topic a few months after beginning implementation. The item is up for discussion only and the board is set to provide guidance to Gibson for future scheduling.
*The board will also discuss a request from Granada High School students and families to add badminton as an athletic offering, according to the agenda. As a discussion only item, the board is set to offer input and direction on next steps.
