Maggie Tufts, an education mentor and parent of former Livermore Valley Unified School District students, aims to join the district’s Board of Education to boost college and career readiness for Livermore youth.
“My experience as a bilingual educator, my years of volunteering during my son’s elementary education, and the work I do mentoring Livermore students, fuels my passion for ensuring quality education for all students,” she said in a statement.
Tufts will face five other candidates in line for two open seats on the LVJUSD Board of Education, with neither incumbent seeking reelection. The other hopefuls are Amanda Pepper, Christiaan VandenHeuvel, Jean Paulsen, Tara Boyce and Deena Kaplanis.
Tufts brings years of experience as an educator to her candidacy. In this role, she said she learned that the sooner families are aware of their children’s academic paths, the more parents can guide them.
“I will encourage better connections with students/families and teachers/staff,” Tufts said of board membership. “I believe that this is crucial for academic success.”
In addition to opening lines of communication, she said she plans to leverage the district’s resources to help all students be prepared for college and their careers. She already has seven years of experience as a mentor to students and families who are navigating those pathways, according to her website.
“This has kept me connected to many schools in our district and up to date on the resources to make the college and career search approachable to many students,” she said on the website.
Tufts plans to give specific attention to students in the English language learner program.
“My diverse background has honed my empathy for families and students in the English Language Learner program,” she said in a statement. “I will advocate for programs for students and families to help navigate the school system so that they can be integrated in a timeframe that maximizes their successes.”
Outside of work, she has served on the PTO at Sunset Elementary School and the PTSA at William Mendenhall Middle School as the treasurer. Currently, she volunteers at Granada High School’s library and the Quest Science Center, a Livermore-based nonprofit that engages the community in science and technology.
Citing her bilingual and bicultural background and her experience in Livermore’s education, she said she is uniquely prepared to serve as a Livermore school board trustee.
