The Pleasanton Police Department announced Wednesday morning that it has arrested two juveniles in connection with the recent string of ATM robberies at various banks across the city.
According to a PPD Facebook post, the two male suspects — a 12-year-old and a 17-year-old — were booked at Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of first degree robbery. Both remain in custody.
“The young age of one of these offenders is alarming,” PPD Lt. Brandon Stocking from the Criminal Investigations Unit told the Weekly in a statement. “It’s extremely rare to arrest a 12 year old for anything, let alone such a violent crime.”
Both suspects are Livermore residents, according to PPD. The 12-year-old was previously arrested in connection with 49 auto burglaries in Livermore last month, officials confirmed.
Leading up to the suspects’ arrests, Pleasanton officers had been investigating seven robberies that occurred at five banks across the city. The robberies primarily took place on weekends between June 12 through June 20.
“In each incident, 2-3 suspects approached and threatened victims at local ATMs, stole varying amounts of cash and fled using a different getaway vehicle,” the PPD stated in its Facebook post on Wednesday. “Due to their age, their identities will not be released.”
The PPD also previously told the Weekly that weapons were purportedly displayed during the most recent incidents and according to Wednesday’s update, officers recovered an unserialized firearm during the arrest of the 12-year-old.
“The juvenile suspects associated with these crimes were identified through the use of surveillance footage in conjunction with vehicle data,” PPD Lt. Nicholas Albert told the Weekly.
Albert said the department is still investigating other potential suspects but added that further information regarding the ongoing investigation cannot be disclosed at this time.
