Livermore police are investigating a drive-by shooting in an area where other assaults occurred earlier that night, the department said in a roundup reporting a busy Fourth of July for city officers.

The department also responded to more than 90 calls related to illegal fireworks use in Livermore on Friday into early Saturday morning – a period of increased patrol assignments to meet a high demand for service, LPD officials said on Facebook.

“I know the widespread use of illegal fireworks continues to frustrate many in our community, including public safety personnel,” Livermore Police Chief Jeramy Young said in a statement. “I want to thank all the officers and dispatchers who worked last night to manage an exceptionally high call volume while continuing to prioritize public safety.”

The most serious incident during that holiday night took place just before 2 a.m. Saturday (July 5). Officers were dispatched to a report of a drive-by shooting on the 300 block of Chestnut Street, across the railroad tracks from downtown.

Police reported finding a man in his 20s suffering from a gunshot wound.

“Officers rendered immediate medical aid before the victim was transported to the hospital. He is expected to survive,” LPD stated. “The Criminal Investigations Bureau is actively investigating. No suspect information is being released at this time.”

The shooting followed two other assault-related investigations around that Chestnut Street corridor early Saturday morning, according to police.

Officers were first called out there just before 12:30 a.m. on a report of a fight involving about 30 people near the intersection of Chestnut and North I streets. Police said a witness reported seeing a man with a gun running toward the Chestnut and North Livermore Avenue intersections.

“Officers located the suspect, who ran from the scene,” police said. “A perimeter was established, and officers found the suspect hiding in a nearby backyard. A discarded handgun was also recovered.”

The suspect, a 17-year-old Livermore boy, was booked into Alameda County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and being a minor in possession of a handgun, according to police.

They said no serious injuries were reported in connection with the street brawl.

Then about a half-hour later, officers responded to a call in the same area about a man who had been stabbed. The man had visible injuries but did not cooperate with police. A suspect in that case had not yet been identified, according to LPD.
