An Oakland man accused of stealing several vehicles from a parking garage owned by Alameda County has been charged with multiple felonies, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Darryl Jamaal Roach, 56, is facing charges of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and identity theft, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Roach was arrested at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, just a few hours after it was discovered that someone had broken into the garage at 165 13th St. in Oakland, across the street from the County Administration Building, and made off with two Sheriff’s Office vehicles.

Two vehicles belonging to other county agencies and one owned by a rental car company were also missing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after information about the missing vehicles was shared with local law enforcement agencies, a sheriff’s deputy working for the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus system found one of them being driven in Oakland.

Roach was arrested after a “high-risk traffic stop” on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, among other things, according to Sheriff’s Office officials.

The other four vehicles were all found within a one-and-a-half-mile radius of the parking garage by about 4 p.m. Sunday.

On Tuesday, a sheriff’s spokesperson said investigators were still trying to determine if there are other suspects in this case or if Roach acted alone.

Anyone with information can call the Sheriff’s Office at (510) 667-7721.
