The contest is open to Livermore residents only with submissions accepted now through April 5.

Participants are asked to submit a poem about science in any form and of any length. There are four different divisions including youth (Kindergarten-fifth grade), middle school, high school and adult. The city’s poet laureate Peggy Schimmelman is accepting one poem per person and there is no entry fee.

Cash prizes for the top three poems in each division include $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third.

Entries must include the following information:

* Name
* Address
* Phone number
* Title of the poem
* Division
* Grade level and school for students

An awards ceremony and reading will be held at Livermore’s Civic Center Library on May 2 at 7 p.m. For more information and to make a submission, email Poet_Laureate@LivermoreCA.gov.

Organizers request that participants use a personal email as they cannot respond to students’ school email addresses.
