The Livermore City Council is set to interview and appoint planning commission applicants to fill two vacancies in a special meeting Monday.
One of the vacancies on the five-member advisory body is due to Steven Dunbar’s election to City Council in November. The other open seat was vacated by Daniel Leary who has completed his term as of March 1, according to a staff report prepared by City Manager Marianna Burch, who has recently changed her last name after getting married.
Members appointed to the planning commission are limited to serving two consecutive four-year terms, after which they may be appointed to the planning commission again following a two-year break in service. The two current vacancies are for regular terms ending March 1, 2029.
Recruitment for the vacancies began Dec. 13, 2024. Advertisements were published in The Independent newspaper, posted on the city’s website, distributed on social media, through the Livermore Joint Unified School District Peachjar email blast, and posters were displayed in downtown kiosks. An informational meeting was also held for applicants on Jan. 21 and the application period closed at 5 p.m. on Jan. 27. By the end of the recruitment process, seven applications were received.
The applicants set to be interviewed Monday include architect and former planning commissioner Neal Pann; foreman for Walschon Fire Protection Inc. Mark Thompson; IT product manager Asa Strout; strategic and executive communications professional Stephanie Shang; information system security engineer Andrew Paterson; retired Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employee and former Livermore chamber CEO Nadine Horner; and strategic planning consultant Charity Steele.
Interview questions were determined by an ad-hoc subcommittee of Vice Mayor Evan Branning and Councilmember Dunbar, according to the staff report. The staff’s recommendation is for the council to review the applications, interview the candidates and make appointments to fill the two open seats. Following the council’s decision, the city clerk will administer the Oath of Office to the newly appointed commissioners.
The special council meeting is set for Monday (March 3) at 5 p.m. The complete agenda is available here.
