An iconic Livermore vintner and musician confirmed his upcoming retirement and intention to sell a property featuring The Singing Winemaker tasting room.
Known as “The Singing Winemaker” as well, Steve Powell has spent the last two decades performing at the tasting room along with guest musicians.
Steve and wife Karen Powell own The Singing Winemaker and community tasting room Tesla Vintners on Tesla Road, where several other wineries previously held tasting rooms.
“We made many, many wonderful friends and acquaintances throughout the many years that we did this work … and we won lots of awards for making nice wines, but we’re pretty much retiring The Singing Winemaker,” Steve Powell told Livermore Vine.
“It’s obviously a desirable thing to sell a business, but The Singing Winemaker was pretty unique to me, being the person and personality associated with it,” the lifelong musician added.
Steve and Karen Powell kicked off their company in September 2004, upon hearing that Steve’s friends were looking for a tasting room space.
“I had a property that fit the need for that, so we opened up a little community tasting room and allowed these other small boutique wineries to have a presence on winery row in Livermore on Tesla Road,” Steve Powell told Livermore Vine.
The community tasting room initially featured Fenestra Winery, Thomas Coyne Winery, Big White House Winery and Little Valley Winery.
But to continue operations, Karen and Steve Powell were required to establish an official winery with licensing. At the same time, they sought out a name for their business.
Given Steve Powell’s musicality, the couple thought it was fitting to call the business The Singing Winemaker.
From its official naming in May 2005 to 2021, Steve Powell said he produced wines.
“We’ve had an absolutely fabulous journey, creating new wines, and creating new blends and participating in music,” he said.
Looking ahead, Karen and Steve Powell plan to move closer to family and settle in Arizona for their retirement.
The property at 5143 Tesla Road is listed on the market for just under $2.5 million. At about 4.75 acres, the property features a wine tasting room, a modular residence of about 2,128 square feet, a three-story tower, two additional buildings as well as infrastructure including a well and private sewage processing system.
“The property is very well set up to support multiple wineries today, and we’re hoping to transition the property to somebody who will benefit from having a great little wine property in the middle of the Livermore Valley Wine (Country),” Steve Powell said.
