The founder of a vintage bookstore-on-wheels is gearing up to open her first storefront next month in downtown Livermore.
Creator and Livermore resident Linda Maggi envisions Word on the Street Books as a communal and event-forward brick-and-mortar with occasions such as book launch parties and author visits.
Described by Maggi as “Livermore’s living room,” she said the shop can be a third space for visitors to relax and connect outside of home and work.
“I really wanted to be able to bring that to Livermore for myself, for all the folks that I’ve met along the way and for all the people I have yet to meet,” Maggi told Livermore Vine.
Maggi works full-time as a technology executive and founded Word on the Street Books as a mobile business about a year ago with the mission of building community through books.
The kick-off involved purchasing a 1973 Steyr Puch Haflinger last July, retrofitting it with shelves alongside her husband as well as the ongoing curation of inventory maxing out at 80 to 100 books.

She has operated the truck as a pop-up at wineries, breweries and coffee shops.
“It’s been a ton of fun. We’ve met a lot of wonderful people, whether they’re local business owners, or just people who love to read or people who want to come out and see an old truck and learn a little bit about what we’re doing,” Maggi said.
Riding on the joy of her mobile business, Maggi began considering its expansion to a place where people can browse and talk with fellow readers.
“Livermore is probably one of the most vibrant communities in the Tri-Valley,” she said. “I think we’re gonna meet the needs of a lot of different people here, by opening a bookstore, and I’m looking forward to that.”
Maggi is preparing to open Word on the Street Books at 2044 First St. The storefront was previously home to The Little & Brave Boutique.
