The Southern Marin Fire Protection District will have a new fire chief starting in October.
Veteran Bay Area firefighter Heather Marques was selected for the role last week, according to a statement from the Southern Marin Fire Protection District Board of Directors.
Marques currently serves as division chief of medical services for the Alameda County Fire Department.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the next Fire Chief of the Southern Marin Fire Protection District,” Marques said in a statement. “Southern Marin has an exceptional reputation for service, professionalism, innovation, and regional collaboration. I look forward to listening and learning from our firefighters, staff, labor partners, Board members, community leaders, and residents, and to working together to build upon the District’s strong foundation.”
Southern Marin Fire Protection District Board President Clifford Waldeck said Marques stood out in a nationwide recruitment effort.
“Chief Marques brings a strong combination of operational experience, executive leadership, regional knowledge, and a genuine commitment to the people and communities we serve,” Waldeck said in a statement.
Marques began her career with the Emeryville Fire Department in 2006 and joined the Alameda County Fire Department in 2012.
She has held roles including firefighter/paramedic, captain, battalion chief, and division chief.
In her current role, Marques oversees EMS operations, firefighter behavioral health and resilience, strategic planning, policy development and other responsibilities.
She has a master’s degree in security studies from the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security, in Monterey, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from University of California, Berkeley.
Marques will formally take on the role on Oct. 12.
