Tara Boyce, a Livermore parent and business owner, is pursuing one of the two open seats on the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District’s Board of Education this fall.

Boyce said she intends to use her financial savvy and education to navigate the district through statewide budget cuts, all the while maintaining quality education for local students.

“I’ve spent my career helping inefficient companies creatively problem-solve,” Boyce said in a statement. “Now I want to use my expertise to help my own children’s school district during this financially difficult time so that our students still have excellent educational experiences.”

She will compete against five other hopefuls for the two open positions on the Board of Education, with neither incumbent seeking reelection. Other candidates on the Nov. 5 ballot are Deena Kaplanis, Jean Paulsen, Amanda Pepper, Margarita Tufts and Christiaan VandenHeuvel.

Having earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in economics and political science, Boyce currently serves as owner of a consulting firm called Kush Solutions LLC. In this role, she helps clients optimize systems and organizational architecture.

The school district needs her educational background and skills to work through diminished funding, Boyce said.

“It is critical to do all we can to keep reductions away from the classroom. We can focus on eliminating redundancies and creatively stretching existing funding along with identifying new funding to serve our school community,” she said in a statement.

Boyce said she is inspired to work at the district because she wants to advocate for students who are struggling.

As a parent of two children at Junction Avenue TK-8 School, she has personal experience working through learning challenges due to medical conditions.

“While navigating the multiple channels at the school and district level, my thoughts kept going to other children that may be struggling but may not have a family member to advocate for them,” Boyce said in a statement. “I will strive to be that advocate for all children.”

She is also dedicated to the community, having lived in Livermore for 13 years and having volunteered at Tri-Valley Haven.

Boyce is endorsed by Livermore Education Association, Livermore Advocates for Public Education, LVJUSD Board Clerk Kristie Wang, former Livermore city councilmember Trish Munro, exiting District 3 City Councilmember Brittni Kiick, LVJUSD Board Member Craig Bueno and District 1 City Councilmember Evan Branning.
