Police and school officials are investigating after a Dublin High School student was assaulted in the locker room by five adults on Friday afternoon, according to principal Maureen Byrne.

Much of what occurred before and after the attack was captured on video, and Dublin police have already identified some of those involved, according to Byrne, who noted the incident would lead to campus safety changes.

“We are outraged that this happened on our campus. School must be a place where all feel safe and supportive,” Byrne said in an email to the school community. “We are working with the police to address this to the full extent of the law.”

“We will make sure to have continued adult presence in the locker room. Until further notice, the hallways facing the parking lot will stay locked and students will need to enter via the doors facing the practice field,” she added.

The situation unfolded after school on Friday, with five adults coming onto the Dublin High campus to confront a student. They followed him into the locker room and beat him, according to Byrne. Football players and head coach Napoleon Kaufman helped stop the altercation.

Administrators, police and paramedics were called to the scene, according to Byrne. Additional details about the student’s condition and the identity of the attackers were not revealed.

Dublin Police Services did not respond to a request for comment on the investigation on Monday evening.

“As always, we want to remind the community to please report any suspicious activity. We want to encourage students to do the same and to let an adult know of any ongoing concerns,” Byrne stated. “We also want to thank our public safety partners for their swift response. We will continue to work as a community to keep our community safe.”

The attack on Friday came the same week as a brief lockdown at Dublin High and adjoining Valley Continuation High School on the afternoon of Aug. 19 after a report of a fight that proved false, according to authorities. Emerald High School across town was also searched that afternoon but did not have a shelter in place.

James Dougherty Elementary School was also locked down last week — not long after school let out on Friday afternoon as Dublin police searched for a homicide suspect in the neighborhood.
