The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate freedom, tradition and community, and this year the city of Livermore embraces that spirit with two standout events.
The day will start with a 5K, or 3.1-mile, run through the scenic trails of Sycamore Grove Park. This will be the second annual Independence Day Dash hosted by Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD). Beginning at 8 a.m., the event is open to participants of all ages.

“This event is a great way to kick off the holiday with some fun and fitness,” said David Weisgerber, LARPD Community Outreach Supervisor. “There’s a real sense of camaraderie as everyone, from competitive runners to families, can come together to break a sweat before hanging out with family and friends.”
The 5K will be followed by the Kids’ Fun Run at 9:15 a.m., giving children ages 12 and under a chance to join the festivities with a 400-meter dash. While participation is complimentary, young runners can opt to purchase a commemorative race shirt for $12 to mark the occasion, according to a press release from LARPD.
To celebrate the 4th of July spirit, all participants are encouraged to dress in red, white, and blue. The runner with the most festive outfit has the chance to win the Stars, Stripes & Spirit Award, which celebrates the best holiday-themed attire.
Both the 5K and the Kids’ Fun Run will start and end at the Wetmore entrance of Sycamore Grove Park.
Proceeds from the Independence Day Dash will support the LARPD Foundation and their mission to improve the quality of life in the city of Livermore through advocacy, collaboration, financial assistance, and recreation opportunities, officials said.

Along with the Independence Day Dash, Livermore residents can enjoy the city’s 2nd Annual Fourth of July celebration at the Livermore Municipal Airport, set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The family-friendly event will feature aircraft on display, live music from The Groove Objective, food trucks and a kids’ zone with activities like rubber duck races, face painting, and arts and crafts. Visitors will also have the chance to watch remote-control aircraft demonstrations and explore emergency vehicles, jets, and helicopters, city officials said.
Attendees will see the return of historic military aircraft from the Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing, such as the North American PBJ Mitchell, the Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun, and the Grumman F6F Hellcat. Additional aircraft on display will come from Livermore-based tenants, East Bay Parks and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, among others.

This year’s celebration will also introduce new features, adding fresh experiences and educational opportunities for attendees of all ages.
“First, we’re excited to welcome the Amador UAVs, a local high school team, who will be showcasing their impressive drone technology. Secondly, we’re proud to offer a sneak peek at a small-scale replica of an upcoming mural. This mural, which is slated for a larger installation on one of our airport hangars in the near future, beautifully illustrates Livermore’s rich history, encompassing its strong ties to science, technology, aviation, and viticulture,” said city spokesperson Sonia Lee.
Organizations supporting and participating in the event include the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, Livermore Police Department, Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, Quest Science Center, Gillig, Las Positas College Foundation, and Livermore Flying Electrons, among others.
