Tri-Valley performing arts group Christian Youth Theater will put their talents on display this month for a musical production of the classic Roald Dahl story, "Matilda". Theater members have described the show as inspiring, imaginative and powerful.
Six performances of "Matilda: The Musical" are planned at Livermore's Bankhead Theater from next Thursday through Sunday. Afternoon shows at 2 p.m. are June 16, 17 and 18, while evening shows for 7 p.m. are June 15, 16 and 17.
The story follows a young girl named Matilda who discovers she holds special psychokinetic powers and is able to move objects with her mind.
In school and her family life, Matilda experiences hardships such as bullying and unloving parents. She quickly learns the importance of speaking up and using her powers for good.
While "Matilda" was written as a children's story, theater members have said the show will entertain adults as well.
Kristin Baer Werder, CYT Tri-Valley artistic director and "Matilda" director, spoke to Livermore Vine about the upcoming shows.
"We're all very excited to show audiences what we've been working on and rehearsing. Our cast, crew and production staff have put in their all to make this show happen," she said. "Most of all I'm excited for the students to see their work and goals come into fruition. Seeing how much they grow and learn throughout the process is really special."
By the numbers, the cast features 60 actors from across the Tri-Valley and a 12-member student orchestra.
Given the powerful message behind "Matilda", Werder hopes the story will resonate with audience members.
"I hope the audience takes to heart the inspiring message behind the show — it's about finding your power and deciding to use that for good," Werder said.
"Matilda as a character goes through a lot and at such a young age. In the musical we see her really come into herself and it's a great example for the kids."
"For those most familiar with the book or movie adaptations, this will surely entertain you too," she added. "(Matilda) is such a classic show. Who doesn't love this story?"
CYT Tri-Valley has operated in the region for over four decades. The group first opened in 1980 with goals of producing high-quality shows that featured an abundance of technical and theatrical skill.
Students in the theater troupe range in age from 4 to 18. Although the theater incorporates Christian values and beliefs into their framework, they say they welcome all backgrounds and prioritize inclusivity.
Along with seasonal productions in the fall, winter and spring, the group offers summer camp programs as well to keep students engaged in the arts.
In the recent past, the theater company has put on shows such as "Five Children and It" and "The Battle of the Boat".
