An 18-year-old man accidentally detonated a firework in his hand last weekend near the In-N-Out Burger located in north Pleasanton, according to city police.
In a Facebook post Wednesday morning, police said the explosion left the teenager with a serious injury and served as a strong reminder of “how quickly fireworks can change lives in a matter of seconds”.
“The injury to the subject’s hand was significant, requiring immediate medical attention,” PPD Lt. Nicholas Albert told the Pleasanton Weekly. “Since this was only documented as an incident without criminal investigation, we are unaware of the medical outcome beyond (that) he was listed in stable condition.”
The Weekly independently confirmed the young man is a 2026 Amador Valley High School graduate.
According to Albert, the incident took place on Saturday (June 6) at approximately 11 p.m. When police arrived, they said they had to apply a tourniquet “due to the severity of the injury” before transporting the teen to the hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Even though Albert said PPD will not be pursuing any criminal charges against the young man, the police department reminded residents that firework violations are subject to fines and citations. Police also said fireworks can be dangerous and should be left to the professionals.
“With the Fourth of July approaching, we want to remind everyone that fireworks are illegal in Pleasanton and can cause severe injuries, fires, and lasting damage — even when people think they are being careful,” PPD stated in Wednesday’s Facebook post. “Please help keep our community safe this summer.”
