A project is underway downtown Livermore to upgrade a section of the water main and install three new fire hydrants for improved water reliability and fire protection.
Running along Railroad Avenue, between First Street and P Street, the improvements by California Water Service are expected for completion by the end of April, weather permitting, utility officials said in a statement in late March.

“This infrastructure improvement project is a testament to our proactive approach of providing a reliable supply of safe, clean water to our customers in Livermore for generations to come,” Cal Water Livermore District manager John Freeman said in the statement.
Beginning in February, the project involves installing 855 feet of new 8-inch water main to replace a section of pipe that was installed in 1949. The new main is expected to last at least 100 years, Cal Water officials said.
By replacing the water main, Freeman said the project prevents failure over time and “helps keep costs lower.”
Work on the upgrades is planned to occur from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on weekdays and overnight to “minimize traffic disruptions to the area,” Cal Water officials said in the statement.
The project in Livermore is among Cal Water’s ongoing work to modernize and upgrade its water system for continued compliance with state and federal regulations as it provides water to over 2.1 million people statewide.
