A budding church in Livermore is looking to branch out of the public building it worships in and sublease space from a private school on the north end of the city in a property perhaps better known for a prior education tenant.

The Livermore Planning Commission is set Tuesday to review a potential conditional use permit for Gospel Community Church to conduct religious services in part of a commercial building leased by King’s Classical Academy at 3090 Independence Drive – one of the sites tied to the now-defunct Livermore Valley Charter Preparatory schools operation.

Gospel, an offshoot of Walnut Creek’s NorthCreek Church that holds services on Sunday mornings in the park district’s Robert Livermore Community Center, wants to sublease about 3,400 square feet of space from the private Christian school, which recently moved into a 16,000-square-foot section of the building (about 20% of the overall building), according to city staff.

The church would primarily offer worship services on Sundays, along with nursery care and Sunday school classes that day. Other church activities could occur on Saturdays, along with one-time special events such as funerals or weddings on the weekends, according to city staff.

Administrative services, counseling sessions and small education group meetings could also take place during business hours on weekdays.

City planning staff, who note that the higher-turnout church activities are expected to happen outside of King’s Classical Academy school hours, recommend approval of the proposal for the building in the business park within the Isabel Neighborhood Specific Plan area north of Interstate 580.

“The church use would promote synergy with Kings Classical Academy, the existing private school in the building, as well as offer potential public-serving uses to nearby residents in the Specific Plan area and broader region,” planning manager Steve Riley wrote in his staff report to the commission.

The Livermore Planning Commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 2) in the council chambers at the Civic Center Meeting Hall, 1016 S. Livermore Ave. The full agenda can be accessed here.
