Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Livermore Library’s Winter Reading Challenge started December 1 and lasts until the middle of January.

It’s a chance to curl up with a favorite read and some cookies, and cocoa, pick up a new book, or read a classic to children or grandchildren.

There is, of course, no such thing as one favorite book. At this time of year, when so many are sharing good food and good cheer, make some time to share good books as well.

Here are a few ideas gathered from different people of different ages and with different interests. What would you add?

* "East of Eden," John Steinbeck

* "Where the Wild Things Are," Maurice Sendak

* "A Gentleman in Moscow," Amor Towles

* "Bread and Jam for Frances," Russell Hoban

* "The Color of Law," Richard Rothstein

* "The Snowy Day," Ezra Jack Keats

* "Elephant and Piggie," Mo Willems

* "The Feynman Lectures," Richard Feynman

* "Different Kinds of Fruit," Kyle Lukoff

* "The Gray Lady and the Strawberry Catcher," Molly Bang

* "Pride and Prejudice," Jane Austen

* "Blueberries for Sal," Robert McCloskey

* "Frog and Toad," Arnold Lobel

* "Good Omens," Neil Gaiman

How does the Winter Challenge work? Log reading time on a paper gameboard or online with the Beanstalk app. Register at Livermore.beanstack.org to earn a mug with treats (as long as supplies last).

The program is sponsored by Friends of the Livermore Library, Livermore Valley Arts, Livermore Wine Trolley, and The Purple Orchid Resort and Spa.
