Authorities have identified the teenage boy from Stockton who died from injuries sustained in the second of successive crashes on Interstate 580 in Pleasanton just before Christmas.
The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau on Friday confirmed the decedent was 16-year-old Samuel Gutierrez — although multiple brief online obituaries out of Stockton said the boy's full name was Samuel Atilio Gutierrez-Chinchilla, with the fatal collision occurring four days after his birthday.
The situation unfolded at about 2:35 a.m. Dec. 19, with two separate crashes in quick succession on eastbound I-580 at the Hopyard Road interchange, according to the California Highway Patrol's Dublin office.
The two vehicles in the initial collision became disabled in the No. 2 and No. 4 lanes, respectively, after a non-injury crash. The driver of a third vehicle did not see the stalled car blocking the No. 2 lane and crashed into it at freeway speeds, causing that previously stopped vehicle to burst into flames, the CHP said.
Gutierrez, who was a passenger in the aflame vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP investigation remains ongoing. The agency reported at the time that DUI was not considered to be a factor in the fatal crash.
