The city of Livermore is continuing to solicit input from the public and provide updates in an upcoming community meeting on projects being considered for the 85-acre Springtown Open Space in the northeast of the city, as well as sharing how they’ve implemented resident feedback from a previous meeting so far.

The meeting set for next Tuesday (June 25) is the second public meeting on proposed recreational projects in the area, with the first meeting in April 2023 garnering a robust turnout of more than 200 attendees.

“Following our community meeting last year, where we gathered valuable feedback on improvements for the open space, and additional community input gathered through our website, the project team is excited to present updates and conduct a Q&A session,” associate engineer Kevin Duffus wrote in an email to stakeholders last week.

While an open space plan for the site was approved in 2017, it was shelved for years due to a lack of funding before aspects of it were resurfaced by the city and park district for consideration and included as part of the city’s 2023 to 2028 Capital Improvement Program.

A majority of participants at last year’s meeting were supportive of proposed enhancements to the site that formerly housed a golf course until 2015 before Livermore voters approved a measure to designate it as open space in 2016 according to the city’s website on the project, and especially supportive of a proposed disc golf course that is now set to be under construction this fall.

Other aspects of the first phase of improvements to the site are set to include an approximately three-to- four-acre park at the southern end of the property between the library and the Springtown Homeowner Association facilities. The park is set to include a play area, shade structure, picnic benches, a multipurpose field, and a community garden.

Since last year’s meeting, a design consultant has come on board and developed conceptual plans that are set to be up for review at next week’s meeting, with environmental analysis for the project currently underway.

The environmental document is set to be open for comments this summer, then head to the Planning Commission and City Council for consideration before final design work on the plan proceeds.

The second Springtown Open Space community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday (June 25) from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Elks Lodge at 940 Larkspur Dr. in Livermore. More information about the project is available here.
